The volunteers of the Animal Ambulance in Amsterdam go out every day and night with great commitment in all weather conditions to help animals in need in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. If necessary, they drive halfway through town for an injured pigeon.
Founded in 1978, the Amsterdam animal ambulance is largely run by volunteers and provides transport services and acute professional assistance to animals in need. Pigeons, cats and dogs are the most transported, but many other animals also receive help ranging from a shrew to a swan and this year even a deer. The ambulance however does not go out for (wild) rats.
During the day and in the evening two to three ambulances (in summer) are in operation, divided over several shifts. And at night there is always one ambulance driving. The service provides transport and emergency care to animals in need for both companion and wild animals in the city. The Netherlands is unique in that last regard. Abroad, there are mainly commercial animal ambulances that focus entirely on pets or other domestic animals.
Every animal and every ride has its own story. Here's a selection of them.
