Marcel Bakker is specialised in portrait photography. He creates or searches for the right light and atmosphere to give his portraits an unusual subtle quality. He always delivers and if necessary can work fast and efficient. He can create powerful portraits as well as light playful unposed images. He wants his subjects to be genuine and looks for an honest authentic reflection.
Apart from commissions Marcel works on personal documentary projects which involve his Anthropological academic background. His reportage work is inspired by non-fiction literature and often has a historical angle. He has a special interest in ‘living history’, in people and places where tradition meets modernity.
Before starting his career as a portrait (and reportage) photographer, Marcel worked as a photo editor and artdirector for Amnesty International, Associated Press and several Dutch magazines (Johan magazine, De Groene Amsterdammer, Justitie Magazine, Intermediair and Sprout).
Marcel Bakker works independently and takes commissions directly from his clients. The portraits in his archive are represented by Lumen Photo in The Netherlands. Visum in Germany handles his archive in reportage work. Marcel also works together with Getty Images Studio and the Global Assignment Agency.
Marcel Bakker is based in Amsterdam and takes editorial and commercial commissions in The Netherlands and neighbouring countries. For larger assignments Marcel is also available world wide.
